Surveying Technician Job at Ciorba Group, Inc., Chicago, IL

  • Ciorba Group, Inc.
  • Chicago, IL

Job Description

You'd be joining Ciorba Group at a pivotal moment, our Chicago office is the engine of a nearly 100-year-old firm that's expanding its footprint across Illinois and deepening relationships with IDOT, the Illinois Tollway, CDOT, and municipalities throughout the region. This is where our largest, most complex infrastructure pursuits are managed, and where career trajectories move fast for the right people.

Our office is conveniently located near the I-90/Cumberland interchange on Chicago's Northwest Side, offering easy access for commuters throughout the region. For those using public transit, the office is just a short walk from the Cumberland Station on the CTA Blue Line, providing a direct connection to/from downtown Chicago.

Ciorba Group is an employee-owned (ESOP) engineering firm with offices in Chicago, Peoria, and Crown Point. We partner with DOTs, counties, and municipalities on roadway, structural, water resources, electrical and lighting, and construction engineering projects that improve communities across the Midwest. We're people-first, collaborative, and built for the long haul, just like the infrastructure we design.

Ciorba Group is seeking a motivated and experienced Survey Technician to join our team. This role is a hybrid of field operations and technical office data analysis, drafting, and calculations. You will assist in conducting topographic, boundary, and construction surveys while using advanced field equipment and office software to transform raw data into accurate maps and records. This is an ideal role for a professional who enjoys the variety of outdoor field work paired with the precision of technical drafting.

The salary range for this position is $50,000-$65,000 annually.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Field Survey Support: Assist in conducting topographic, boundary, and construction surveys.
  • Preparation and Research: Perform necessary research, calculations, analysis, and document preparation for upcoming survey field work.
  • Data Processing: Review and process survey results, including field notes, data, photos, plan markups, and structure inventory sheets, to produce accurate CAD drawings, charts, maps, and legal documents.
  • Technical Drafting: Draft Plats of Highway, survey base maps, boundary and ALTA Surveys and Preliminary Legal Descriptions writing.
  • Knowledge of Drone/UAS surveying methods and photogrammetry software (e.g., Pix4D, Reality Capture, Global Mapper) is a plus.

The Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Experience: 3-5 years of field and/or office land surveying experience.
  • Personality: You possess excellent interpersonal skills and a proactive approach to teamwork. You are reliable and maintain daily communication with your team and stay flexible in support of dynamic project schedules. You maintain positive client, vendor, and internal team member relationships.
  • Professionalism: You are detail-oriented and committed to your own professional growth, ideally holding or pursuing an LSIT or CST certification.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in MicroStation or AutoCAD, with a solid grasp of robotic total stations, GPS, and data collectors.

Physical and Position Requirements:

  • Mobility: Ability to stand or walk for extended periods in varying weather conditions and uneven terrain.
  • Manual Labor: Ability to perform tasks such as bending, digging with a hand shovel, cutting brush, and carrying equipment/stakes (5-50 lbs.).
  • Transportation: Must be eligible to drive company or personal vehicles to various jobsites as required.
  • Travel: Ability to perform occasional out-of-town assignments as project needs dictate.
